Dr. Ferrán Pellisé Urquiza

Director of BSI - Barcelona Spine Institute, Spinal Surgery Department at Hospital QuirónSalud, Barcelona

For over 25 years, Dr. Ferran Pellisé has fully dedicated his career to the surgical treatment of spinal pathologies. In particular, he has focused on scoliosis and other conditions that cause changes in the morphology of the trunk, an area in which his work is an international reference.

He received his doctorate cum laude as an orthopaedic surgeon from the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona in 1994. Since 2014, he has been head of the Spinal Unit at the same hospital, and led the Spinal Research Unit at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (Vall d'Hebron Institut de Recerca, VHIR). He has previously coordinated the VHIR’s Surgery Research Area and been a member of its Scientific Committee. He has also been an Associate Professor in the Surgery Department at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 2021.

Internationally recognised, Dr. Pellisé is a reference in the application of artificial intelligence to spinal surgery. In 2011, he founded the European Spine Study Group (ESSG) alongside other renowned researchers. Today, the ESSG is considered the main platform for the analysis and evaluation of adult scoliosis in Europe.

He has also been a member of the prestigious Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) since 1998. He was elected as its Director at Large in 2018 and as its Secretary in 2020, the latter marking the first time a non-North American has held this position in the Society’s 50-year history.
